Claude VonStroke – Birdhouse
Barclay Macbride Crenshaw, known by the stage name Claude VonStroke, is an American house and techno producer based in Los Angeles. He is the owner of the San Francisco-based label Dirtybird which expanded in 2013 to open an office in Los Angeles.
In 2016, he was named America’s Best DJ in Pioneer DJ and DJ Times’ annual poll and in 2017, was nominated at the Electronic Music Awards for both DJ of the Year and Radio Show of the Year for ” The Birdhouse.
Crenshaw formed the Dirtybird label on his own in 2005.
The label released its first single that same year.
Crenshaw later started Mothership in 2007, a subsection of the imprint, to satisfy the more underground techno enthusiasts.
Dirtybird has been recognized as one of the top independent electronic music record labels in the world.
In 2017, Mixmag named Dirtybird the number one label of the decade.
That same year,
Billboard Magazine named the label one of “the best 5 independent dance labels of 2017.
“ Notable artists from the label include Justin Martin, Walker & Royce, and Green Velvet.
The label celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015 with a compilation album and the first annual Dirtybird Campout festival in California later that same year.
In 2006, Crenshaw released his debut album,
Beware of the Bird.
The most notable single from this album was
“Who’s Afraid of Detroit?”
a song that Resident Adviser listed as #28 on its Top 100 Tracks of the 00’s.
The inspiration behind the title came from Crenshaw’s time living in metro Detroit when he noticed people in the suburbs were afraid of going downtown,
despite the city being “really tame. “Other notable early releases include “Deep Throat” and “The Whistler.
Still, relatively early in his career, the Fabric imprint invited Crenshaw to participate in their revered mix series which was released in May 2009. He accepted without hesitation because he had wanted to do a mix for them since he started DJing house.
He also stated that being invited to do a Fabric Mix is
“a nice achievement for a DJ, something that says, ‘OK, this person is legit.'”
Crenshaw has also appeared on Pete Tong‘s highly-lauded Essential Mix Radio show in both 2007 and 2013.
In 2009, he released his second studio album, Bird Brain and in 2013 released Urban Animal, his third long-player. When asked in an interview about the production of his sophomore album in comparison to his debut, Crenshaw said that Beware of the Bird was more of a collection of singles and that Bird Brain was wider in scope stating, “there are hooks on this one but I’m not trying to kill you with every breakdown on this album.
When Urban Animal was released, NPR compared it to the prior two LPs by describing it as having “some serious bump-and-grind basslines.”
In 2016, Crenshaw was named America’s Best DJ in Pioneer DJ and DJ Times’ annual poll, surpassing global powerhouses as Kaskade, The Chainsmokers, and Bassnectar. The rankings were based on fan votes, both online and in-person.
